What causes detachment from classical music?
There are many reasons for this detachment. Firstly, it might simply due to the fact that classical music is not the most popular genre of music anymore. So it means that people are not familiar with the genre itself, possibly resulting in their lack of interest. People might think that classical music is an “old form” of music, and that only the older generations can get it. In comparison to modern music, classical music can be considered more abstract and hard to understand by some people due to the lack of lyrics and “music videos.” Others might also feel that classical music is more “poetic”. They might think that the word “poetic” implies that classical music is more abstract and implicit. Some people might think that classical music involves more emotions expressed through the musical techniques, which would require the listener to at least have a basic knowledge of music theory.
This is not true at all. Classical music can be enjoyed by anyone, even without a music background. The “lyrics” and movements are hidden within the music; you just have to listen carefully. To illustrate my points, here is a TED talk given by conductor Benjamin Zander on the transformative power of classical music.
